`Fatwa' against those taking part in J&K polls

By Our Special Correspondent

SRINAGAR APRIL 11 . Terming the coming Assembly elections as "un-Islamic'' the recently banned Jamiat-ul-Mujahideen has issued a `fatwa'(edict) of "death sentence" to those participating in these elections.

In a statement faxed to newspaper offices here, the Jamiat spokesman, Jameel Ahmed said the decision to eliminate participants in the elections as candidates or otherwise was taken at a meeting of Ulema (Islamic scholars) which met in Baramulla. The issue of elections was discussed threadbare and the five-member Ulema Council, headed by Moulana Abdur Rab Qasmi resolved that `` no Muslim can contest elections which are held under New Delhi's dispensation''.

Any such exercise would strengthen the rule of anti-Muslim forces, said the statement and warned the participants of physical elimination. The Jamiat's "operational commander" Ahmed Sauleh said the edict had immediate effect and "it is religious obligation upon the Jamiat militants to kill those who take part in elections''.

The outfit admitted having killed a number of National Conference members for the same reason and said ``this `fatwa' will further facilitate the cleansing of such elements''.
