U.S. Congressmen praise MP

By Our Special Correspondent

MUMBAI APRIL 11. Two U.S. Congressmen, Gary L. Ackerman and Jim McDermott, former and current co-chairmen of the Congressional Caucus on India, have hailed Murli Deora, member of the Rajya Sabha, in special mentions in the U.S. Congress.

They called him "one of the strongest advocates and closest friend'' of the United States. And their remarks have been entered in Congressional records.

Mr. Ackerman, a Democrat from New York who was conferred with a Padma Bhushan, referred to Mr. Deora as a "legendary fund-raiser'' and a man of "generous time and energy'' which helped foster ties between India and the U.S. Mr. Deora is a former international president of the Parliamentarians for Global Action, and now, international vice-president, Red Cross.

On April 9, Mr. McDermott spoke of Mr. Deora as one who "worked hard to bring our two nations together... even during the weakest of times in our relationship. His views were often at odds with the foreign policy establishment of his country.''

When the two "grew close, Murli was vindicated.'' Both the Congressmen hailed his "uncontested election'' to the Rajya Sabha.
