Polluted lake spells doom for fish

HYDERABAD April 11. A large number of fish have been dying due to pollution in Edulabad lake, near Ghatkesar, in Ranga Reddy district for the past three to four days.

Pollutants are flowing in from the Musi contaminating the lake, which has traditionally been reserved for fishing with no other activity permitted by fishermen.

According to the BJP general secretary, K. Laxman, MLA, who visited the lake along with the district unit president, Bheem Rao, on Thursday, water in the five sq km water body had turned almost black due to pollutants, mainly sewerage and industrial wastes from Patancheru.

In a statement, Dr. Laxman urged the Government to compensate the 400 fishermen for whom the lake was the only source of livelihood. He said the pollution in the lake was getting worse every year with both humans and cattle falling sick after drinking its water. There were even instances of miscarriage among women living near the lake area.

Emphasising the need to construct five sewerage treatment plants upstream of the lake, the MLA said he would lead a delegation to the Chief Minister to discuss the matter.
