Councillor makes history of sorts

NEW DELHI APRIL 12. The independent Councillor from the Alipur ward in North- West Delhi, Kumari Aruna, yesterday made history of sorts by becoming the youngest ever Chairman of any of the 12 zones of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi.

Born on February 28, 1981, Ms. Aruna, was declared Chairman of the Narela (Rural) Zone in a draw of lots after she was tied up with the Bhartiya Janata Party Councillor, Narain Singh, in the election for the post held at Town Hall here. Both polled two votes each.

In her maiden speech, Ms. Aruna, who is first year student of MA (Hindi) at Swami Shradhanand College, said the development of the area would be her top most priority as the Zonal Chairman. Right now appearing in the annual examinations of the University of Delhi, she said: "Primary education, pensions for the senior citizens and the needy and development of approach roads in rural areas would be my other priorities,'' she said.

Incidentally, area wise, Narela (Rural) is the largest Zone of the MCD. Like Ms. Aruna, the Deputy Chairman and the Standing Committee member from the Zone, Narain Singh and Raj Karan, were declared elected by draw of lots respectively. Both are from the BJP.

In the rest 11 Zones, Chairman, Deputy-Chairman and Standing Committee member from the Zone was declared elected unopposed as there was no other candidate. With this the BJP failed to open its account for the post of Chirmanship of any of the 12 Zones.

Among the other Zonal Chairmen elected today were Nathu Ram Nagar (Civil Lines), Satbir Sharma (Karol Bagh), Indu (Central), Ashok Kumar (South), Ramesh Datta (city), Madhu Khurana (Sadar Pahar Ganj), Sanjay Puri (West), Memwati Barwala (Rohini), Zameer Ahmed Munna (Shahdara North), Harish Jain (Shahdara South) and Tarsem Bansal (Najafgarh). All are from the Congress.

The Standing Committee members elected from various zones were Shalu Malik from Civil Lines, Manjit Singh Khanna (Karol Bagh), Bhagvir (Central), Kunwar Sen (South), Brij Mohan Sharma (City), Pratap Narain (Sadar Pahar Ganj), Satpal Sethi (West), Atma Ram Gupta (Rohini), Jagdish Pradhan (Shahdara North), Ramesh Pandit (Shahdara south) and Bijender Singh (Najafgarh). All belong to the ruling party.

The Deputy Chairman of the various zones are Sadhna Sharma (Civil Lines), Tulsi Ram Sablania (Karol Bagh), Khavinder Singh Captain (Central), Santosh Dhaiya (South), Zameer Ahmad (City), Thakur Dass (Sadar Pahar Ganj), Sumiti Maggo (West), Devender Yadav (Rohini), Anil Kumar (Shahdara North), Savitri Sharma (Shahdara South) and Kanta Rani (Najafgarh). All of them are from the Congress.
