Govt. to promote tourism industry: Naidu

By Our Staff Reporter

GUNTUR APRIL 12. The much-awaited Amaravati Mahotsavam began with a bang with the Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu, declaring the festival open by releasing hydrogen balloons into the air here on Friday.

Addressing the gathering at the Brahmananda Reddy Stadium after inaugurating the festival, the Chief Minister said that the Government had decided to promote the tourism industry in the State just as it did in the case of information technology (IT). Mr. Naidu said that there was a lot of potential in the State for promoting tourism. Lauding the theme -- review the past, revel in the present and redefine the future -- with which the Amaravathi Mahotsavam was designed, He said that tourism could be used as a vehicle to create a conducive atmosphere for attracting foreign investments into the State. No State in the country was attaching as much importance to tourism as Andhra Pradesh, he claimed.

Referring to the Amaravati Mahotsavam, Mr. Naidu said that Guntur had numerous Buddhist centres, including Nagarjunakonda and Amaravati, and beautifully developed places like Nagarjunasagar and Kotappakonda for exploiting the tourism potential.

The Chief Minister released a souvenir, published in connection with the Mahotsavam, a tourism guide, published by the Department of Tourism and a compact disc on the tourist places and attractions in the district.

He felicitated nine prominent personalities, including Vavilala Gopalakrishnaiah, Sardar Gouthu Latchanna and Ravi Satyanarayana.
