Following an initiative by the State Human Rights Commission member, S. Sambandham, the Superintendents of Police of the Nilgiris and Tirunelveli districts, within whose jurisdiction the relatives were staying, made arrangements for sending the patients back home. The three were among the over 100 patients who were brought to the Mental Hospital here after a disastrous fire in one of the asylums (mananala kaapagams) at Erwadi. Accordingly, Salaluddin of Kothagiri, Sivasubramanian of Masinagudi and Nambirajan of Tirunelveli went back home accompanied by their relatives. The rights panel member was present when the three were handed over to their relatives. Mr. Sambandham complimented the SPs for their efforts to send the patients home.
