Spiritual heads' help for talks with naxals?

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD APRIL 12: The People's War Group of naxalites have said that for a right atmosphere to be created for talks with the Government, there should be an end to "false encounters", combing operations and harassment. This was stated by Devender Goud, Home Minister, at a video conference here today.

He added: "The Government wants to create a peaceful atmosphere paving way for the talks but when we go into details, we have some problems and apprehensions.'' He said combing operations were taken up only when they were required by law.

He said there would not be any false encounters but at the same time he asked the naxals not to disturb the goodwill which was essential for any dialogue. The problem of naxalites was 30 years old and it could not be solved overnight.

The Minister said the Government would consider involving spiritual heads like Sri Jayendra Saraswathi, eminent Christian missionaries and the ulema in the process of Government-naxal talks.

The Minister was responding to queries at a press briefing at the Secretariat on Friday after a video-conference with DIGs of the regions and SPs of districts. Referring to the custodial deaths reported from Medak district yesterday, he said such deaths were giving a wrong message to the public that poor people were being killed in petty cases. In the case of yesetrday's deaths, responsibility was fixed on police officers and an enquiry was ordered.
