Letters to the Editor
Sir, Your Editorial `The curse of age' (April 12) is apt and thought provoking. Apart from the powers that be, all individuals must have compassion for the old and feeble to make their lives sustainable. We often find elders being thrown out by their kith and kin, more particularly when they are financially dependent on the progeny. Today's educational system has totally bypassed the element of compassion and respect for the elders. Moral values in life should be imbibed in children right from the school, like in the decades past, and the curriculum should have a place for this. Our scriptures focus a lot on this virtue and mere calling them preposterous and outdated, or identifying them with a particular community will be self-defeating and deceptive. Governments must create a suitable climate for this, apart from providing succour to the elderly citizens through various programmes suggested by you.
