Sachin's sixth consecutive dismissal to a spinner

By Mohandas Menon

** West Indies' total of 501 was its highest against India at this venue bettering the previous best of 470 it made in April 1983. Incidentally, this

was West Indies' 50th 500-plus total in Tests. The last occasion the team reached a 500-plus total in a home Test was against England at St. Johns in

March 1998.

** This was also West Indies' 14th such score against India. The last time the West Indies exceeded 500 runs against India was at Calcutta in December 1987 when it made 530 for five decl.

** The last occasion the West Indies lost all ten wickets after scoring over

500 runs against India was when it scored 526 in the Port of Spain Test match way back in April 1971.

** The four Guyanese players in the side (Hooper 233, Chanderpaul 140,

Sarwan 53, Nagamootoo 15), who were the four top scorers in the West Indies first innings, have made 441 runs between themselves, which is 88.02% of the team's total of 501.

** Sourav Ganguly (5) has failed yet again with the bat while leading the side. He now has 849 runs at an average of 31.44 in 31 innings as captain. If

his three big innings against weaker opposition (84 v Bangladesh, 65* and 136 v Zimbabwe) are not considered his run aggregate as captain will be reduced to 564 runs at a paltry average of 22.56.

** Sachin Tendulkar playing in his 50th away Test match of his career posted his fourth 50 in the West Indies. During the previous tour in 1997 he had three scores over fifty, without reaching the three figure mark - 88 at Port of Spain, 92 at Bridgetown and 83 at Georgetown. Now in six Test matches in the Caribbean Tendulkar has scored 368 runs (avg. 61.33).

** Tendulkar, has now been dismissed by a slow bowler in his last six Test

innings. Moreover he has also been dismissed leg before in his last three innings. * The unbeaten partnership of 93 runs between Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman was India's best for the fifth wicket at this venue obliterating the previous best of 44 runs between Vijay Manjrekar and Polly Umrigar, way back in March 1953.

** Meanwhile, Dravid continues his good form in the Caribbean. In six Test matches - Dravid now has 417 runs at an average of 83.40. His unbeaten 57 was his fifth 50 in the West Indies, without registering a three figure score.
