Mohanan and Augustus in joint lead

KOCHI APRIL 14. The lead narrowed down to two players - former Kerala champion U.C.Mohanan and K.X.Augustus - after the fifth round of the State `B' chess championship at the Sree Krishna Cafe auditorium, Mattancherry, on Sunday evening.

Fifth-seeded Augustus had jolted the top-seeded U.S.Satheesan in the fourth round but drew the next game, against John S.Ralph. Both Augustus and Mohanan have 4.5 points from five rounds.

Eleven players shared the lead after Saturday's second round. The three-day, seven-round event concludes on Monday.

John S.Ralph (4) drew with K.X. Augustus (4.5), Sudhakar Pai (3.5) lost to U.C. Mohanan (4.5), U.S. Satheesan (3.5) drew with K.R. Dhanulal (3.5), P.S.
