World Cup winner to take home $ 2 million

London April 14. T he South African organisers have announced this morning that the prize money for next year's World Cup winners will be five times as much as it was for the last tournament held in England in 1999.

In all, a grand sum of $ 5 million, with the winning team taking home $ 1.39 million, in addition to the money it accumulate in the earlier matches. Thus, the prize fund to be paid out jointly by the International Cricket Council (ICC) and the United Cricket Board of South Africa — where the tournament will be staged — will be a total of $ 3.4 million.

The losing semifinalists will also rake handsome money. The salient feature of these increases announced are cash offer, at every stage, for every one in the game and even the smallest countries, if they lose all the six pool matches, will comfortably earn $20,873.

In line with the global trends, the marked increase is due to an increase in money sponsors plus a wish to reward successful team, said Mr. Ali Bacher, the tournament executive director. "We believe that this prize money will be a major motivational factor for all the competing teams, '' Mr. Bacher added.

Mr. Malcolm Speed, ICC Chief Executive, said that he was pleased to have increased the prize money available to such a significant level. "We are sure that the teams taking part will strive to win as there will be substantial prize money at each level of the tournament,'' he said. The prize money table: Winner: $ 2,000,000; Runner-up: $ 800,000; Losing semifinalists: $400,000; 5th placed team: $150,000; 6th placed team: $ 80,000; Group match win: $10,000; Group match loss: $ 5,000; Super six match win: $ 40,000; Super six match loss: $20,000.
