By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI APRIL 14. Remembering martyrs and freedom-fighters, the former Prime Minister, Narasimha Rao, today exhorted the youth to "strengthen the patriotic fervour'' among themselves which was necessary to preserve the "precious'' Independence.

Mr. Rao, who was addressing a function - "Balidan Diwas'' -- organised by the All India Anti-Terrorist Front (AIATF) here to commemorate the Jallianwala Bagh massacre and also mark "Baisakhi'', asked the youth to fight the evil of terrorism.

Asking people to take more interest in problems and issues being faced by the nation, the former Prime Minister urged all sections of the society to unitedly take the nation on the path of progress and prosperity.

The AIATF Chairman, M.S. Bitta, expressed concern over the country's deteriorating political environment leading to more fragmentation in society. He urged people to defeat all vested interests who were trying to create unrest in the country.

Mr. Bitta also announced that every year, his organisation would award movies and artistes promoting patriotism and deplore terrorism through their films and work.

The production team of movie "Pukar'' -- Surinder Kapoor, Boney Kapoor, Anil Kapoor, Sanjay Kapoor and Sridevi received the award for their contribution in spreading the message of anti-terrorism and patriotism.

A two-minute silence was observed in memory of martyrs. Also present at the function were Vimla Sharma, the wife of the late President, Shankar Dayal Sharma; Sardar Kultar Singh, the brother of Shaheed Bhagat Singh; the Member of Parliament, L.M. Singhvi; and the pop star, Daler Mehndi.
