Unimpressive show by Indians

NEW DELHI APRIL 15. Jaspal Rana missed making the air pistol final by one point, and finished ninth in the shooting World Cup in Sydney.

The Padma Shri awardee had rounds of 95, 97, 97, 96, 97 and 97 for a 579, while four others with rounds of 580 made the final. There were three tied for the gold at 685.1, and Vladimir Isakov of Russia clinched the title with a 10.0 in the shoot-off.

Samaresh Jung who had bettered Jaspal's national record in air pistol with a 584 on the recent European circuit, could muster only a 575 with a series of 97, 99, 93, 97, 93 and 96, as he finished twelfth. Ved Prakash took the 22nd place with a 563.

Samaresh failed to make the free pistol final, and had to be content with a 552. He had a series of 94, 91, 93, 90, 91 and 93 in taking the 12th spot.

In men's air rifle, Abhinav Bindra finished joint 11th with five others, with a 594. He had rounds of 99, 98, 99, 100, 100 and 98.

Byung Eun Kim of Korea took the gold as he followed a 597 with a 104.2 in the final. In fact, six of the eight shooters who made the final were on 597, making it a tough contest.

In trap, Manavjit Singh finished joint 14th with a 117. Mansher Singh could not live up to his opening day's form, when he shot a 72 out of 75, and finished joint 19th with compatriot Anwer Sultan with a 114.

Michael Diamond took the gold with a 146. He had to win the tie-shoot against two others by nailing the third bird. In fact, there was a long-winding fight for the silver, and Lance Bade of the US pipped Adam Vella of Australia by successfully blasting the 18th bird.

In double trap, National champion Major R.V.S. Rathore was joint 23rd with a 129.

Kuheli Gangulee finished joint 12th in the 50-metre sport rifle prone event with a 584. She had rounds of 98, 98, 98, 96, 96 and 98.

Anjali Vedpathak had rounds of 97, 97, 98, 95, 96 and 99 for a 582 in finishing joint 20th. The air rifle silver medallist, Anjali will have a chance to show her ability in the 3-position event, though she has not been training much for that event because of shortage of ammunition.

Abhijeet Konduskar shot a 591 in 50-metre rifle prone event in the men's section, but the Engineering student from the US would not make the final, as he figured 12th in his batch of 30 shooters.

In the other batch A. B. Subbaiah was joint 14th with a 589.
