Arathi ambushes Kanimozhi

BANGALORE April 16. Backed by a good serve and steady stream of volley winners, Arathi Duraiswamy pulled off the day's biggest upset by ousting Tamil Nadu team-mate and third seed, Kanimozhi 7-6, 4-6, 6-2 in the opening round of the girls under-16 event in the South Zone AITA Mini Junior/Sub Junior tennis championship being organised by the Century Club here on Tuesday.

Arathi used her height to good advantage with the serves and followed most of the strong ones to the net to break Kanimozhi's rhythm.

Quite often Arathi stuck to challanging length, putting an extra burden on the third seed even as Kanimozhi progressively grew tentative after pulling her socks midway to knot the set scores.

As Arathi freely stroked her way to an early third set initiative, Kanimozhi was finding it difficult to `go through' her shots, forcing her to `choke' on big points.

Led by second seeded K.A. Swathy, other seeded players had a smooth passage to the next round.
