ONGC overcomes Indian Navy

By Our Special Correspondent

MUMBAI APRIL 16 . Oil and Natural Gas Commission, Dehradun, overcame a third minute shock before making its presence felt in the 40th Bombay Gold Cup hockey tournament with a hard-earned 2-1 win over a spirited Indian Navy side in a first round match on Tuesday. The forwardline will have to be a little more alert, the percentage of conversions much higher but the Dehradun boys have shown the ability to be a potential threat to every team in their path.

Corps of Signals, Jalandhar, had to wait till the tiebreaker before getting past Mumbai Port Trust 5-4 in another match. The local team took the lead, but ran out of steam after the breather and went out in the penalty strokes.

Indian Navy can be a speedy, cohesive unit on their day. Three minutes into the match, the sailors had taken the head start through P.L.Murugappa, the striker tapping in a square pass from Manoj Lokhande, finishing a move initiated by Sikander Singh. ONGC, strengthened by the inclusion of internationals Kamaldeep Singh in the goal and Anurag Raghuvanshi in the defence, came close to getting the equaliser in the 23rd minute, pushing goalwards after a Navy defensive lapse, but Mohd Fahad could not convert with goalkeeper R.V. Suresh out of position.

ONGC's attacking approach paid off, Navy defender Amit Kiro punished for a stickcheck on Arshad Khan, leading to a penalty stroke, which Anwar Khan was lucky to convert. His teammates may have heaved a sigh of relief after seeing the ball crawl onto the boards, past the Navy custodian who had already committed himself with a dive to his right. After a couple of goalmouth misses, the Dehradun side finally struck the match-winner through a Ranjit Singh.

The second goal came off ONGC's second penalty corner, Aftab Ahmed's hit blocked by a diving Navy goalkeeper, who was helpless when Ranjit latched onto the deflection and scooped the ball into the roof of the net. Raghuvanshi was shown a yellow card, forcing the Dehradun side to play out the closing minutes with 10 players.

Two walkovers marred the second day's proceedings in this event organised by the Bombay Hockey Association. Rock Rovers, Chandigarh, not turning up for a first round match against Mumbai Customs. Earlier in the morning, Tata Sports Club gained an entry into round two after Indian Oil opted out. It is learnt Meerut XI has also withdrawn, giving second round opponents Central Railway a walkover into the next stage.

Corps of Signals, Jalandhar played patiently for Mumbai Port Trust to tire them out in the first half, then shifted gears after the breather. The local side took the lead through Abhijit Shirsat penalty corner conversion, but it was only a matter of time before the Jalandhar side asserted themselves. Tarsem Singh struck through a penalty corner in the 64th minute, but failed to finish off the match in scheduled time. Eventually it was left to goalkeeper Kuldeep Singh to block attempts by MPT's Shirsat and Salauddin Siddique, the first shot taken into the his body and the second low to his left. Signals were successful in converting four of five strokes to win 5-4.

The results: (First round):

Corps of Signals 5 (Tarsem Singh, Pawan Verma, Gyan Shyamdass, Prem Singh and D.V.S.Rana) bt MPT 4 (Abhijit Shirsat 2, Javed Shaikh, Shailendra Singh); ONGC 2 (Anwar Khan, Ranjit Singh) bt Indian Navy 1 (P.L.Murugappa); Tatas SC w/o Indian Oil; Mumbai Customs w/o Rock Rovers.

Wednesday's match: Rashtriya Chemicals & Fertilizers vs Delhi XI.
