Hockey
By Our Sports Reporter
Barely 48 hours ago, Punjab Police and Indian Oil Corporation Limited had clashed in the league fixture and the result was Punjab Police went down 0-3. In the final of the U & I Hockey tournament at the Karnataka State Hockey Association on Tuesday, the same teams clashed again and the verdict was 6-0 in favour of Policemen. It was either a reversal of form at its best or a clear indication that the previous game was a farce! Despite the fact that two teams involved in the final were guilty of contriving a result, a large turnout of local hockey fans came to witness the final. IOCL started out with a fine raid in the tenth minute when IOCL skipper Deepak Thakur sallied in and sent in a resounding crack. However Punjab Police's goal-keeper Manpreet showed fine reflexes to effect a good save. Punjab Police showed its dominance in penalty corner conversions and used the first corner to maximum effect. Baljit Singh Dhillon sent in an unstoppable ball and IOCL's keeper Devesh Chauhan stood rooted to the spot. Punjab Police's second penalty corner too bore fruit. Baljit stopped the push in and relayed to Sarabjit who feinted and passed back to Baljit to score again. Two minutes to the half-time, Tejbir Singh `Lucky' slammed in the third goal after Sarabjeet Singh had made a timely pass. A minute after the break IOCL made a strong move which resulted in a penalty corner. Bikramjeet had a great chance to score with Manpreet out of position but defender S. Joha effected a goal-line save. Manpreet saved another corner the very next minute and IOCL's attacking intent was effectively curbed. Trailing by the margin of `victory' that it had gained in the league match, IOCL was never in the hunt after that. Skipper Daljit Singh stroked in the fourth goal after his brother Baljit Singh had moved up along the line and relayed to Gabbar. Gabbar saw Daljit completely unmarked and crossed the ball for the latter to score. IOCL's defender Sunil Yadav showed fine reflexes in thwarting Punjab Police's next effort. Tejbir Singh looked all set to score his second goal having drawn out Manpreet from under the bar. However , his push was stopped by a diving Sunil Yadav. But the last year's title holder had more in store. Sarabjit Singh scored off Baljit SIngh in the 58th minute and three minutes before the hooter, Gurjant Singh made it a tennis score for the winner. The organisers in a move to penalise the scheming teams of the league match decided not to consider any of the players for the special awards. However a couple of prizes did go to merited players especially the young goalkeeper from Karnataka, Bharat Chetri. Some other awards however were gained by default. The awards were: Best Goal-keeper Bharat Chetri (Rs. 25,000); Best Fullback: Khalco (Army XI, Air Ticket from Indian Airlines); Best Half-back: Vikram Pillai (Air India, Air Ticket from Indian Airlines); Best Forward: Samir Dad (Complimentary Dinner from San Pedro); Most Promising Player: Praveen Kumar (Tamil Nadu, Computer) and Player of the Tournament: Arun Rawat (Karnataka, Rs. 75,000).
