5 killed in J&K blast

JAMMU APRIL 16 . About five persons have been killed and 26, including seven army personnel injured in two powerful landmine blasts in Pulwana and Doda districts of Jammu and Kashmir since Monday. Three persons were injured when militants threw a grenade at a registration counter of the Vaishnodevi shrine near Katra.

Police sources said militants detonated a landmine in Awantipore on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway this morning when two army vehicles were passing. The mine planted in a postal letter box was triggered at about 9.10 a.m.

Three civilians, including a school boy, were killed in the explosion. The injured included seven army personnel. The soldiers then opened fire. Nineteen civilians were injured. Panic gripped the area and shops were closed.

In another incident, two boys were killed when they ran over a landmine at Sambad Jawari, around 40 km from Ramban, in Doda district.

A boy was killed by militants in Maisuma area triggering a protest. One jawan of the Rashtriya Rifles was killed when militants fired at their camp in Kandimarg Kulgam.

Three persons were reported injured when militants hurled a grenade at a registration counter at the Katra base camp of the Vaishnodevi shrine on Monday evening.
