3 killed in firing in Gujarat

By Our Special Correspondent

AHMEDABAD APRIL 16. At least three persons were killed and three injured in police firing here today.

While one person was killed in police firing at Vejalpur locality here on Monday night following incidents of stone throwing and arson, two persons were stabbed to death in Ramol this afternoon. Four persons sustained injuries in police firing and stone throwing in the area. A scooter-rider, who was hit on the head by a stone, was reported to be in a critical condition in hospital.

Shops and roadside cabins were set ablaze. The mobs also made several attempts to stone the trains running on the Ahmedabad-Delhi track at Girdharnagar locality forcing police to resort to repeated lathicharge to drive them from the track.

The three-hour relaxation in curfew both in Dariapur and Dani Limda police station areas passed off incident-free, police said.

With the secondary and higher secondary examinations scheduled to begin on Thursday in Ahmedabad and Baroda and some of the cities and towns where it could not be held last month, the authorities are trying to make transport arrangements for the students in relief camps to reach the examination centres.

Cong. launches relay dharna

Meanwhile, the Gujarat Congress today launched a 36-day-long programme of relay dharna to press the demand for the removal of the State Chief Minister, Narendra Modi.

The pradesh Congress president, Amarsinh Chaudhary led the dharna in front of the Sabarmati Gandhi Ashram here. His Rajasthan counterpart, Girija Vyas, and the AICC secretary, Mahavir Prasad, participated in the dharna.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Prasad accused the BJP of destroying the country's social fabric and democratic structure by instigating communalism for its vote bank politics. But the party had been badly exposed before the people, who would not allow its designs to succeed.

`Cong. scared'

The BJP State unit today said the Congress was resorting to delaying tactics because it was scared to face the electorate.

The State BJP secretary and party spokesman, Nalin Bhatt, accused the Congress of "instigating'' violence to delay the holding of fresh elections. Any attempt by the Congress to disturb peace in the State would be firmly dealt with by the BJP Government, he added.
