Report on 'split' sends TDP into a tizzy

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI APRIL 19. A report of a possible split in the Telugu Desam Parliamentary Party over a "likely move" to withdraw support to the Vajpayee-led National Democratic Government sent the party leadership into a spin today. A report by a television channel prompted the Telugu Desam chief and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu, place an urgent call to the Parliamentary Party leader, K. Yerran Naidu here. The latter assured his leader that all the party MPs stood as one man in the House and that a prompt denial to the report had already been issued.

The Minister of State for Urban Development, Bandaru Dattatreya, today urged the Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee, to speak to the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister over the current stand-off. Mr. Dattatreya said, the TDP was a trusted ally which was now in dilemma since the Congress and the People's Front were challenging its conduct. The TDP's insistence on a discussion on Gujarat without specifying any rule reflected its attempt not to create hurdles for the Government. He said he was confident the TDP would continue its support to the Vajpayee Government.
