PM briefs President on Gujarat

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI APRIL 19. The Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee, called on the President, K.R.Narayanan, this evening and discussed with him the political developments, including the situation in Gujarat. He also briefed him about his recent visit to Singapore and Cambodia. The 50-minute meeting is being described as ``routine'' as it is the practice for the Prime Minister to regularly meet the President and keep him informed about all the important issues.

However, as some political parties have already expressed the view that there had been a "genocide'' in Gujarat and allegations of "ethnic cleansing'' have also been made, the discussion on Gujarat is seen as significant.

The meeting comes after a week-long stalling of Parliament on this issue, and the demand that the Centre should have asked the Gujarat Chief Minister to send his resignation has been articulated not only by the Opposition but also by allies like the Telugu Desam Party, and the Trinamool Congress .
