About 20 BJP workers brought the effigy up to the Hindu College junction in a procession. As soon as they reached the junction, the activists of the City Congress Committee who were meeting at the Rajiv Gandhi Bhavan, also reached there and attacked the BJP workers. They snatched the effigy and took it away with them. Meanwhile, the BJP workers sat on a dharna at the junction. The former Minister, Mohammed Jani, tried to walk up to the BJP activists. However, he was prevented by the police. In the process, he picked up an argument with the circle inspector, Narasa Raju, of Old Guntur. The Congressmen alleged that the police held Mr. Jani by his collar. However, senior party leaders, including L. Appi Reddy, pacified the leader, and managed to defuse the tension. However, the Congressmen lodged complaints against the BJP activists at Lalapet police station, while the BJP workers filed complaints against the Congressmen with the Kothapet police station. The Congress workers removed the saree from the effigy and dressed it up with a shirt and trousers and named it as `Vajpayee' and burnt it in front of the Rajiv Gandhi Bhavan.
