New Delhi
By J. Venkatesan
It was a rare sight to watch MPs cutting across party lines (with the exception of the DMK), sharing a common platform. Of the 12 MPs, three were from MDMK, two Ministers, M. Kannappan and Gingee Ramachandran and Krishnan; four from PMK--Ponnuswamy, N.P. Shanmugham, Durai and Ilangovan; two from AIADMK--Malaichamy and Saroja; one from Congress--Farooq Maricar; one from CPI (M)--Mohan and one from the BJP--Madan. They were presented a shawl and a momento each. However, none of them spoke on the occasion. The president of the Sangam, M.N. Krishnamani, explained to the MPs the role being played by the Sangam for the promotion of the Tamil community in the capital. He said the Sangam had planned to create three `chairs' for promotion of Tamil research in `Tirukkural' `Tirumandiram' and its contribution for development of science and sought the help of the MPs in this regard. It was also proposed to form a Federation of Association of Tamils spread across the country.
