Arrest Modi, says Shahi Imam

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI APRIL 19. The Shahi Imam of Delhi's Jama Masjid, Syed Ahmed Bukhari, today demanded the arrest and trial of the Gujarat Chief Minister, Narendra Modi, for the "genocide of Muslims'' in the State.

"Mr. Modi should be tried just like the former President of Yugoslavia, S. Milosevic, for the genocide of Albanian Muslims in Kosovo,'' said the Imam at the Friday prayer meeting at the Jama Masjid. The Army should not be recalled from the riot-hit State till normality was restored, he added.

Reacting to the statements of the Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee, the Imam said: "Mr.Vajpayee should view the activities of those who are vowing for a Ram Rajya. He has to answer to which religion those who shed Muslim blood in Gujarat belong."

Referring to continuing violence against Muslims, he said: "Helpless Muslim women were being made target by people of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and police.''

He demanded the rehabilitation of Muslims at the very place from where they were dislocated. Also, arrangements should be made for students who could not appear for examinations due to a "feeling of insecurity''.

He criticised the Minority Commission's role in the entire episode.
