Announcing this here today, the Minister for Food and Civil Supplies, D.B.Inamdar, said that the price of rice had been reduced from Rs. 9 to Rs. 8 a kg. and of wheat from Rs. 6.70 to Rs. 5.50 for APL card holders. This was being done to encourage use of the PDS facility by the APL card holders, he said and added that the department would provide quality foodgrains. The prices for BPL cardholders remains at Rs. 6.15 and Rs. 4.65 per kg. for rice and wheat respectively. He said the survey of BPL cardholders would be completed by the month end. As of now, 63.71 lakh BPL cards had been issued, including 4.76 lakh cards under the Anthyodaya Anna Yojana scheme and 2.26 lakhs Yellow cards in Bangalore (Urban), Bellary, Kodagu, Dakshina Kannada, Mysore, and Bagalkot districts. The number of APL cards distributed was 49.98 lakhs. He said that from April 1, the State was getting 2.25 lakh tonnes of rice and 56,414 tonnes of wheat every month. The scale of issue for both BPL and APL cardholders had been fixed at 28 kg. rice and seven kg. wheat a month. The minister said that regular inspection of petrol stations was being carried out to ensure that there was no adulteration. However, after the department officials had taken samples of petrol/diesel, the same were being certified by the oil companies which gave room for manoeuvrability, he said and added that he had written to the Centre to have an independent authority to certify the seized product.
