Letters to the Editor
Sir, Now that India has been asked to mediate by both the warring parties in the 20-year-old ethnic conflict in Sri Lanka which has claimed 65,000 lives, India's priority should be securing peace there, setting aside its prejudice against the LTTE for its role in the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi. Accordingly, the following suggestions could be considered: Lift the ban on the LTTE and urge the Sri Lankan Government to do like wise. Invite the LTTE supremo, Velupillai Prabakaran, to India and persuade him to drop the demand for Eelam and settle for regional autonomy. Offer India's help to negotiate an amicable settlement. Beside helping establish durable peace in a friendly neighbouring country, India would also earn the goodwill of both parties to the conflict.
