Kashmiri Pandits throng Ramji temple after 13 years

SRINAGAR APRIL 21. For the first time in thirteen years since militancy erupted in the State, Kashmiri Pandits today thronged the Ramji temple here to celebrate Ramnavmi.

Over 2,500 Hindus including a large number of women and children, took part in the havan organised by the Hindu Welfare Society Kashmir (HWSK), an organisation representing the voice of Kashmiri Pandits.

The temple, located at Babar Shah in the heart of the city, reverberated with religious songs. Devotees started visiting the temple since early in the morning to perform pooja, reminding one of the pre-militancy days when thousands of Pandits used to visit the temple on Ramnavmi, Omkar Nath Pajnoo, chairman of the HWSK, said.

"We have performed the havan to get the blessing of our Lord so that peace and happiness will be restored in Kashmir," Mr. Pajnoo added.

The occasion has also given Kashmiri Pandits a chance to unite and chalk out a programme to highlight the problems being faced by them, the chairman said.

He also praised the Muslim community for its continuing support.
