Soni, a veteran of 10 National titles, including a hat-trick in individual time-trial effort, beat the scorching heat and a field of 97 cyclists, of which only 17 made it to Pune. `The King of the Bhor Ghats' crown went to Shankar Rathod of Bagalkot, who clocked 23 min., 29 secs and bagged Rs. 5,551. Soni received the winner's trophy, a certificate and a cash prize of Rs. 10,000. Dr. Michael Kenn of Austria finished second. Kenn recovered brilliantly after a few setbacks to finish behind Soni. The second and third placed cyclists received Rs. 9,000 and Rs. 8,000 respectively in this Rs. 90,000 prize money event organised by Maharashtra Cycling Association and sponsored by Balsara Home Products for the 23rd year in succession. The results: 1. Rajendra Soni (Mumbai) 4:36:31; 2. Dr. Michael Kenn (Austria) 4:41.1; 3. Uttam Nale (Pune) 4:41.21; 4. Shankar Nari (Bagalkot) 4:41.53; 5.Ramanna Ahteatta (Bagalkot) 4:42.16; 6. Pankaj Marlesha (Mumbai) 4:42.16. King of Bhor Ghats: Shankar Rathod (Bagalkot) 23m, 29s.
