The 30th-ranked Schnyder also upset sixth-seeded Amelie Mauresmo of France in the second round and third-seeded Serena Williams of the United States in the quarterfinals. ``I am more confident now than ever because once you can beat Mauresmo, (Mary) Pierce, Williams, Capriati in a row, I mean, what else can you expect as a player?'' said Schnyder, who will be competing for her eighth-career title. ``It's the greatest thing you can do.'' Schnyder will meet 58th-ranked Iva Majoli of Croatia in the first final between unseeded players at a WTA Tour Tier I event. The Swiss holds a 4-0 career edge over Majoli and has won all eight sets they've played. Majoli, the 1997 French Open titlist, upset seventh-seeded Sandrine Testud of France 6-2, 6-4 in the other semifinal. ``It was very hot and it wasn't the best match I've played,'' said Majoli. ``I knew that Sandrine had injured her ankle yesterday and that makes it tough to play.'' Schnyder earlier predicted that she would take the title at Charleston whether she plays Testud or Majoli. ``I beat Iva all the time,'' she says. Although Capriati is the reigning French Open champion, it was obvious in the 69-minute semifinal that Schnyder used her clay-court experience to beat the top seed. Capriati, who became frustrated and started arguing calls in the second set, was quick to give Schnyder credit. ``My day was not as good as hers, but I don't feel like I gave it to her,'' Capriati said. ``I think she really played well.'' Schndyer hit the lines almost at will and moved Capriati around the court. Schnyder trailed 3-4 in the first set after surrendering her serve in the seventh game. From that point on, Schnyder gained control of the match, winning the next six games for a 6-4, 3-0 lead. ``I was tired, but I felt great because I played three unbelievable games in the beginning of the second set and we had some great rallies,'' Schnyder said. ``The crowd was into it and it was a great feeling.'' Capriati's failure to defend her title here will cost her the world number one ranking, which will return to Venus Williams on Monday. ``I haven't thought about it maybe I've lost it for the moment, but I wouldn't say the whole year,'' Capriati said. ``It's kind of been just going back and forth, so there's still a lot of tournaments to play.'' The 11th-ranked Testud said her injured right ankle didn't bother her in the semis as neither player played well. ``That's one of the worst matches I played in a long time,'' Testud said. AFP
