Hospital staff blamed for patient's death

By Our Staff Reporter

ANANTAPUR APRIL 21. Corruption in Government hospitals is leading to neglect of patients and even to death in some cases. In one such incident in the Government Area Hospital at Kadiri, an autorickshaw driver, who was admitted to the hospital with symptoms of gastroenteritis, died on Sunday due to `negligence' of the hospital staff resulting from the patient's inability to give money to them.

According to information reaching here, Batra Raju (22) of Sunnapugutta thanda in Kadiri Rural mandal, was admitted to the hospital last night by his wife, Mamata. After much delay, the doctors put saline to the patient. However, after sometime, the solution stopped injecting into the patient's body due to improper fixing of the needle into vein.

The patient's wife immediately rushed to the nurse concerned and pleaded to check the saline put to her husband stating that it had stopped injecting inside. But to her dismay, the nurse did not bother to attend on the patient and had cursed his wife that she did not give money for taking care of the patient.

After an argument with the nurse, the patient's wife rushed to the duty doctor and explained the situation. The doctor too took his own time to come to the patient. But, by the time the doctor reached the patient he was dead.

Relatives of the patient alleged that the patient died only because of the negligence of the hospital staff. They also charged that the hospital staff had also created a problem while handing over the body.
