Deshmukh stays ahead

NEW DELHI APRIL 21. International Anup Deshmukh led with 7.5 points after nine rounds in the Global Networks international rating chess tournament at the Russian Cultural Centre here.

The LIC employee, Anup did not take any risk and played a quick draw with G. B. Joshi who took his tally to 5.5 points.

Anup was closely followed by Nassir Wajih of Railways with seven points, while Vishal Sareen was on 6.5 points.

Nassir Wajih drew with the top-seeded International Master N. Sudhakar Babu, as the latter recovered ground with correct manoeuvres in a Glek variation.

Gurpreet Pal Singh scored over V. S. Negi following a Sicilian accelerated dragon.

The results (ninth round): G. B. Joshi (5.5) drew with Anup Deshmukh (7.5); Nassir Wajih (7) drew with N. Sudhakar Babu (5.5); Vishal Sareen (6.5) bt Sanchit Saran Agarwal (2); Gurpreet Pal Singh (6) bt V. S. Negi (3.5); Karun Duggal (2) lost to Akshay Kumar Jain (6); S. K. Sinha (5) bt Sankalp Modwal (2.5); D. S. Negi (4) bt Navneet Sharma.

Eighth round: Anup Deshmukh drew with Vishal Sareen; S. Modwal lost to Nassir Wajih; N. Sudhakar Babu bt D. S. Negi; V. S. Negi lost to G. B. Joshi; Akshay Kumar Jain bt S. K. Sinha; N. Sharma w/o G. P. Singh; Sanchit Saran Agarwal bt Karun Duggal.
