GYMNASTICS: PATRAS (GREECE): Russia's Svetlana Khorkina (see picture) on Saturday joined the legendary Nadia Comaneci in winning her third straight individual all around title in the 24th European women's artistic gymnastics championships. The 22-year-old Olympic gold medal winner captured the event with a 37.592 points total edging out Verona Van de Leur of the Netherlands who took the silver medal with 37.542 points. Ukraine's Alona Kvasha won the bronze medal with 36.405 points. Comaneci, the Romanian turned American who impressed the world with her performances in the 1970's, was in the stands of the Tofalos Stadium to see Khorkina equal her record of winning three European individual all around championships. ``I'm delighted with this gold medal but also very tired. I haven't yet realised that I drew level with Comaneci's record of three gold medals. Anyway, I'm very happy,'' Khorkina said. Van De Leur applied most of the pressure for Khorkina with the Russian taking the gold medal thanks to her 9.387 points performance in the last apparatus, the floor. Khorkina also scored 9.118 in the vault, 9.787 in the uneven bars and 9.300 in the beam. Khorkina also won the all around competition in the team event with 37.524 helping Russia capture first place. In the junior women's all around individual competition, Russia's Anna Pavlova took first place with 36.724 followed by Floarea Leonida of Romania with 36.180 and Elena Anochina of Russia with 35.755. BOXING: CARDIFF: Britain's Joe Calzaghe retained his WBO world super-middleweight title on points after a bruising battle against former IBF champion Charles Brewer. Calzaghe, determined to export his reputation from Europe to the United States, outlasted the American to defend his title successfully for the 10th time on a unanimous decision. The resilient Welshman is now unbeaten in 33 fights, 27 of them knockouts or stoppages, while Brewer has lost nine of his 46 fights. Both fighters started at a furious pace, exchanging heavy blows from close and long range at the Cardiff International Arena. Calzaghe, however, received a stern reprimand from his father and trainer Enzo, annoyed that the champion had not kept his distance early on. CRICKET: LONDON: Australia's Andrew Symonds made 89 for Kent as it piled up 577 for seven declared on the second day of its English First Division County Championship match at Canterbury. Hampshire seamer Chris Tremlett kept going valiantly to finish with four for 129 amid the onsalught. But later all eyes were on teammate John Crawley. The former England batsman and Lancashire mainstay left Old Trafford in acrimonious fashion after he lost the county captaincy at the end of last season. However, he put all that behind him by making an unbeaten 56 on debut for his new county as Hampshire closed on 136 for two. FOOTBALL: SYDNEY: Australian soccer players wanting to play in July's Oceania Nations Cup have been told that they will have to play for free, with overseas based players having to pay their own air fares home, Australian newspapers have reported on Sunday. Soccer Australia (SA) has reportedly asked the Professional Footballers Association to accept a deal in which players are paid based on performance from tournament prize money, receiving no match fee or daily allowance as they did in previous Nations Cups. SA also said that overseas based players wanting to play in the competition will have to pay their own way to Australia and subsequent flights to Auckland where the tournament kicks off on July 5th. DAEGU (SOUTH KOREA): Dutch taskmaster Guus Hiddink paid a rare public tribute to his South Korean players after a much needed win over Costa Rica. The South Korean team and its coach have faced strong criticism over recent performances. But Hiddink, who has put the squad through a punishing fitness regime, said South Korea was on course for ``a big performance'' at the World Cup finals it will co-host in less than 40 days.
