Eight-acre park to be developed behind ESI

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD April 21. A decrepit water body at Shyamalakunta behind the ESI Hospital, Sanathnagar, is to give way to a beautiful park spread over eight acres with spots for picnicing, relaxation, jogging, walking and other forms of physical exercise. The Urban Forestry division of the Municipal Corporation of Hyderabad is taking up the transformation work at a cost of Rs.1 crore.

The MCH Commissioner, Chitra Ramachandran, who visited the water body along with the Mayor, T. Krishna Reddy, the Minister for Tourism, T.Srinivas Yadav, on Saturday as part of the Clean and Green tour, told The Hindu that the park work would benefit the residents of Model Colony, Balkampet, Ameerpet, S.R.Nagar, Sanathnagar, A.G. Colony and Vengalraonagar.

She said the water body was hitherto restricted to a small area full of sewerage.

It was looking like a dirty water pool surrounded by thorny shrubs and garbage dumps and was a shelter for stray animals.

The entire area was taken over from the Revenue Department by the MCH with a view to developing the much-needed greenery.

The concept of the park was derived from the study of the surroundings, accessibility, drainage service, topography and ecology.

The concept is based on ecological and environmental conservation. About 20,000 cubic metres of earth is to be desilted from the water body. This earth is to be used for preparing landforms and bunds, which would serve the park. The sewerage water would be diverted.

According to the MCH Commissioner, the park would have several features like ornamental illumination, landscape with raised landforms, lawns, ornamental shrubbery, parking for 50 cars and 200 two-wheelers and wooded areas.

For the benefit of fitness freaks, there would be a dyna track for doing exercises while jogging/walking, apart from the normal jogging paths.

Keeping in view the large number of children flocking to the park, a `totlot' with play equipment designed for different age groups would also be provided. Besides, an inter-connecting road would be laid towards the north-east side of the park for the residents staying on the northern side to gain access to the park.
