Letters to the Editor
Sir, This refers to A.K. Dasgupta's letter (April 22) on the report "History back on the rails" (April 17). Mr. Dasgupta's information on annas and paise is wrong. These are the small coins prevailing up to 1957 when the new system was introduced. (1) 1\4 anna three paise, (2) 1\2 anna six paise (3) 1 anna 12 paise, (4) 2 annas 24 paise (5) 4 annas or 1\4 rupee 48 paise (6) 8 annas or 1\2 rupee 96 paise and (7) 1 rupee 192 paise. So, one rupee, one anna and six paise mentioned in the report is correct, and not as clarified by the reader.
A.R. Ramamurthy,
