India has opposed secession in Sri Lanka and has stated that a solution of the Tamil question must conform to Sri Lanka's status of a territorially united and sovereign nation. At the same time, New Delhi has advocated that the aspirations of all ethnic communities in Sri Lanka should be met so that a lasting solution can be found through negotiations. Ms. Kumaratunga this evening held talks with the External Affairs Minister, Jaswant Singh, as well as the former Prime Minister, I. K Gujral. Detailed discussions with the Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee, are slated for Wednesday. Ms. Kumaratunga will deliver the first Madhavrao Scindia memorial lecture on Tuesday.
