Letters to the Editor
Sir, At his 75th birthday party, the former Prime Minister, Chandra Shekhar, uncharitably criticised his chief guest, Mr. Vajpayee, over his functioning as Prime Minister and tendered uncalled for advice to him to either govern properly or quit. Was that a proper place or occasion to lambast the country's Prime Minister? Only a rude and crude politician can stoop to that. As fate would have it, the very next day, the Supreme Court cut Mr. Chandra Shekhar to size by its judgment ordering the immediate surrender of 75 acres of prime land which he had unlawfully grabbed. A few months ago, the same court had ordered the Government to take back over 700 acres of forest-land similarly acquired by him. These short-term Prime Ministers are a drain on the exchequer. Huge amounts are spent on their security, medical expenses etc, and, in addition, they also misuse their clout.
P.J. Bagilthaya,
