Samaresh takes 14th spot

NEW DELHI APRIL 25. Samaresh Jung had a honourable 14th placing in the free pistol event, with a 556, in the shooting World Cup in Shanghai on Thursday.

The 31-year-old Samaresh recovered from a poor start with three rounds of 95, to improve his last week's effort of 552 when he finished 12th in Sydney.

The competition was strong and thus Samaresh could not reach a sniffing distance of the final in which 562 made the cut.

Vivek Singh and Ved Prakash could not make much of an impression as they languished in the 25th and 30th positions.

In rapid fire pistol, Ronak Pandit shot a 566, but had to settle for the 22nd slot. The Mumbai boy had a taste of the competitive field after a relatively easy outing in Sydney when he was ninth with a 567.

Emil Milev of Bulgaria pipped Marco Spangenberg of Germany 691.2 to 691.1 in grabbing his second successive gold medal in the event following the one in Sydney.

However, the German had the good fortune of clinching the Olympic quota, which he richly deserved, following a brilliant sequence of 9.9, 9.4, 10.6, 10.2, 10.9, 10.6, 10.1, 10.2, 9.8, 10.4 in the 10-shot final, though the gold eluded him by 0.1 points.

In double trap, the Indian marksmen were below par, as Major R. V. S. Rathore (118), Gaurav Sondhi (110) and Moraad Ali Khan (107) took the 42nd, 49th and 51st positions in a field of 54.

Waldemar Schanz of Germany took the Olympic quota as he won the shoot-off against Li Shuangchun of China 2-1 after both had tied at 186 at the end of the final.
