Naveen moves clear, Mahima enhances lead

Chennai April 25. With two decisive victories in the seventh and eighth rounds of the Jayam College of Engineering and Ramco Cements 28th Tamil Nadu State sub-junior boys' chess championship for the V.L. Ethiraj Trophy at Dharmapuri today, T.U. Naveen Kanna of Thiruvallur stepped out of the joint leader pack to emerged the clear leader.

With 7 points, he was half a point ahead of top seed R. Siddarth of Chennai. Three more rounds remain in this 11-round Swiss system championship.

Second-seeded Mahima Rajmohan of Madurai increased her lead to an impressive 1.5 points in the 16th Tamil Nadu State sub-junior girls' division for the Arasan Kalyanasundari Ammal Gurusamy Trophy. She has 7.5 points and was followed by Iswarya Shobana of Salem, K. Jenitha Anto of Tiruchi and Anjanaa N. Sowjanyaa of Kancheepuram district with six points apiece.

Local lass D. Maanasa Priya, who was in second place on Wednesday, had a very poor day today. She lost in the morning to leader Mahima and in the eighth round in the evening, she was beaten by Jenitha. Unless something dramatic happens in the last three rounds, Mahima is sure to clinch the title on Saturday.
