The 18-carat gold trophy was unveiled here at a function organised by Gillette, the co-sponsor of the 2002 Football World Cup being jointly hosted by Korea and Japan. As the trophy made its first appearance following a brief promo, hundreds of shutters clicked and video cameras zoomed, grabbing every detail of the work of Italian sculptor Silvio Gazzaniga. Unfortunately, to match the excitement of the FIFA trophy's arrival in India, there was no sports personality of eminence to receive it. The main programme to welcome the trophy, however, will be held in football-mad Kolkata on Friday. The trophy will be displayed at the Salt Lake Stadium where India's best-known footballer, Baichung Bhutia, will present it to the fans. A two-hour extravaganza has been planned, including a musical performance by singer Usha Uthup, a laser show and fireworks. The trophy will then travel to Dhaka where an official reception has been organised by the Government of Bangladesh. Subsequently, the trophy will tour Kochi and Mumbai where select audiences will have the opportunity to see it. The 4.970-kg trophy will then fly back to the FIFA vaults in Zurich. The trophy is given to the official sponsors of the FIFA World Cup for exhibition in select countries. Gillette, as part of its World Cup promotion, chose India as one of the destinations. It was earlier taken to Romania, Turkey and Poland.
