BJP, Samata give notice for discussion on Bihar

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI APRIL 26. A group of Bharatiya Janata Party and Samata Party MPs have given a notice for a discussion on Bihar as a censure motion under Rule 184 in the Lok Sabha. A similar notice is expected to be given in relation to West Bengal by the Trinamool Congress Party.

A senior BJP leader said today that statistics on violent deaths of Dalits, women and minorities in Bihar had been compiled and the level of violence there is "ten times more than witnessed in Gujarat recently''.

Talking about the need for a "level-playing field'' in the Lok Sabha, the BJP chief whip, V.K. Malhotra, had warned two days ago that the BJP and its allies would bring censure motions related to Bihar and West Bengal, and he had hoped the presiding officer in the Lok Sabha, Deputy Speaker, would admit the motions for the same reasons as he had done the Opposition-sponsored motion on Gujarat.

The BJP is quite upset by the fact that while admitting the motion related to Gujarat, Mr. Sayeed had mentioned Article 355 of the Constitution which mentions that it is the responsibility of the Union to protect all States against internal disturbances.
