APK concern over dacoity in plantations

By Our Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM April 27. The Association of Planters of Kerala (APK) has expressed serious concern about the emerging trend in dacoity in the plantation areas of the State.

In a statement here today, the chairman of APK, G. J. Ancheril, said the entire atmosphere in the plantation sector would be vitiated if this dangerous tendency was not checked immediately.

His statement comes in the context of an armed robbery that took place on April 26 in broad daylight in the Semnivalley Tea Estate in Idukki district.

He said two employees of the estate, while returning from the local branch of the State Bank of Travancore with Rs. 3.5 lakhs in cash for payment of wages to the labourers, were waylaid by a group of six armed robbers on April 26. The gang attacked the estate employees with sharp weapons and, after taking the money, sped away in a waiting vehicle.

Some local people chased the dacoits and caught five of them complete with their booty. They were now in the custody of the Peerumedu police, Mr. Ancheril said.

He said the plantation sector was, even without such threats, going through one of the worst crises ever due to the unprecedented fall in prices of all plantation commodities. The emergence of dacoity in this sector would be the last straw. He urged the State Government to take this issue very seriously and ensure that the tendency was nipped in the bud.
