The NCP acting president, Cyriac John, at a press meet here today, dropped enough hints that his party was against admitting the Congress(S) to the CPI (M)-led coalition. ``My personal opinion is that the Congress(S) should not be taken into the LDF fold,'' he said. The LDF has a clear policy on the entry of a new constituent. ``A final decision in this regard would be taken only after discussing the issue in the LDF State committee,'' he added. He pooh-poohed the argument of Mr. Ramachandran that the NCP should not continue in the LDF following the revival of the Congress(S). ``We are more pro-Left in our attitude and functioning. And that is what the Left parties also think. The party has strengthened its ties with the LDF although it maintains good relationship with the Congress in Maharashtra,'' he said. Mr. John said his party would take a positive decision if Mr. Ramachandran was willing to rejoin the NCP. ``He had left the party without stating any concrete reason. He had quit in protest against the decision of the high command to support of the Prevention of Terrorism Ordinance (POTO) Bill in Parliament. But the fact is that he quit the party all of a sudden several days after the Bill was passed,'' he said. The NCP State committee had authorised Mr. Ramachandran to convene the decision of the members to the national working committee in New Delhi. ``But he did not care to attend the meeting,'' he said adding ``after Mr. Ramachandran left the party not a single leader of stature is with him''. Mr. Cyriac alleged that Mr. Ramachandran was now sending feelers to the Congress for joining that party.
`Cannot revive Cong(S)'
Our Staff Reporter writes from Thrissur: The NCP State general secretary, A K Saseendran, said here today that Mr. Ramachandran could not revive the Congress(S) as its registration was frozen by the Election Commission when it merged with the NCP long back. Addressing a press conference, Mr Saseendran and other district office-bearers of the party said neither could he register a party with the name Congress(S). He alleged that Mr Ramachandran was using the `Charka-laded' Congress flag, which was exclusively set apart for the Congress (I). ``He was seen holding this flag at receptions accorded to him in Kochi and Kannur.'' Mr Saseendran said the NCP was a constituent of the LDF and there was no possibility of it being excluded from the front. He alleged that the Chief Minister, A K Antony, was avoiding judicial inquiries into the various allegations of corruption levelled against the UDF Government, from the broiler chicken scam to the plundering of forests in the Mathikettan Shola, with a view to shielding his friends.
