Tamil Nadu
By K. Manikandan
Dr. Ramadoss wondered why his repeated demand for a caste-wise census in the State was being ignored by successive governments. Neither the DMK nor AIADMK regime made any attempt to conduct such a census, he said. The MBCs were ``deprived'' of education. It was a plot to deliberately keep the benefits of education away from them. In north Tamil Nadu, the pass percentage among the Vanniyars was very low. This proved that the quality of education imparted to them was very poor, alleged Dr. Ramadoss. In the entire State a total of 49 lakh people had registered with employment exchanges, with Vanniyars accounting for 20 lakhs. Condemning the government decision not to fill up backlog vacancies, he said it was a plot to ``ostracise'' the MBCs. Out a total of 325 IAS and 180 IPS officers, only 10 and 8 officers were Vanniyars, he claimed.
Clash, confusion
Confusion marred the proceedings when PMK supporters, who were injured in a clash at Marakkanam in Villupuram insisted on climbing the stage to present their grievances to senior leaders. Kannan (25) of Thirubhuvanam was killed and seven-year-old Vinodha sustained injuries in the nose when their van was attacked by villagers at Marakkanam. Trouble erupted in the evening when the partymen coming in a convoy on East Coast Road allegedly teased women. An occupant from another jeep threw a liquor bottle on a resident at Anumanthai. At this, the enraged villagers gathered together and threw stones at vans sporting the Vanniyar Sangam flag. In the group clash, villagers damaged the windscreens of several vehicles. A couple of vehicles were also set on fire and damaged. Kannan was hit by a knife thrown by a villager. Profusely bleeding, he was brought to Mamallapuram and when he was later referred to the Chengalpattu General Hospital, was declared `brought dead'. Close to 9 p.m., the injured PMK supporters, who arrived at the meeting venue insisted on meeting Dr. Ramadoss. Only after more party supporters complained of having been attacked with stones at Marakkanam did the PMK men realise that a major clash had taken place. Senior leaders and district functionaries pacified them. This morning Dr. Ramadoss visited the Chengalpattu hospital to console the partymen who had come along with Kannan. Meanwhile, the news of death of two persons in a road accident at Manamai on ECR close to Mamallapuram added to the confusion and PMK supporters were under the impression that three of their cadres were killed in the Marakkanam clash.
