`Linking of rivers being studied'

By Our Staff Reporter

COIMBATORE April 27. Plans for 31 river links to divert the waters from rivers in the Himalayan range to those in the peninsular region were being studied in an effort at providing a lasting solution to the water crisis, the Chairman of the Central Water Commission, Suresh Chandra, said here today. The pre-feasibility study on all these links has been completed and in some cases the feasibility study was also over. The reports on the rest were being prepared, he said after opening the new regional office of the CWC in the city.Even as the study offered hopes of ending the water crisis, he sounded a note of caution that, ultimately, even distribution of water without any dispute among riparian States hinged on a "harmonious thinking'' at the political, bureaucratic and technical levels. "Co-operation among the users is vital. The thought that water is a national asset must permeate through all sections. Only then inter-basin transfer of water can be successful."

While talking to presspersons later, he pointed out that genuine co-operation seemed to be emerging among the riparian States as they apparently began to feel the need for harmonious sharing of waters.

On the Cauvery dispute, he said the final award from the tribunal was awaited and the CWC was hopeful that both Tamil Nadu and Karnataka would come to a common ground to resolve the issue.
