No truck with Congress: CPI(M)

By Radha Venkatesan

CHENNAI April 27. Spoiling the chances of forging a ``secular'' front, opposed to both the ruling AIADMK and the main opposition DMK in Tamil Nadu, the CPI(M) today decided not to have any ``alliance or seat adjustment'' with the Congress in the May 31 Assembly byelections.

The CPI(M)'s State committee, which met here, decided to field a candidate in Saidapet here, and seek the support of the CPI and the Tamil Maanila Congress, but not of the Congress.

The CPI(M) secretary, N. Varadarajan, said the party would support neither the DMK, a constituent of the BJP-led NDA at the Centre, nor the AIADMK, which was pursuing ``wrong'' economic policies. However, the CPI(M) gave room for a ``tacit'' seat adjustment, deciding not to fight in the other two constituencies.

The State CPI secretary, R. Nallakannu, said he was pursuing his efforts at bringing about seat adjustments among the ``secular'' parties opposed to both the DMK and the AIADMK. Under the proposed ``seat arrangement'', the CPI will contest in Acharapakkam, leaving Vaniyambadi to the Congress, he said.

Reacting to the CPI(M) decision not to tie up with the Congress, the TNCC president, E.V.K.S. Elangovan, said his party was ``only talking to the CPI'' on seat adjustments. The Congress was keen on fighting in Vaniyambadi and not in Saidapet or Acharapakkam. A decision would be taken in consultation with TMC and CPI leaders tomorrow.

The AIADMK has decided to contest all three seats.
