CMs support Jayalalithaa initiative

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI April 27. The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa's call to the Centre that it ease curbs on borrowings for developmental projects has drawn support from her Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh counterparts.

Ms. Jayalalithaa wrote to the Prime Minister, A.B. Vajpayee, recently, urging him to remove the ``blanket curbs'' on borrowing from financial institutions and open market. She forwarded copies of her letter to the other Chief Ministers.

In response to her letter, the Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh Chief Ministers, S.M. Krishna and Chandrababu Naidu, have communicated to Ms. Jayalalithaa that they can take up the issue with the Prime Minister. They have also said they will urge the Prime Minister to convene a meeting of Chief Ministers to discuss the financial situations of various State Governments.

Another plea by Ms. Jayalalithaa for a one-time special package for all States to help them tide over their financial crisis, has evoked a positive response from various Chief Ministers.

The Chief Ministers of Maharashtra, Bihar, Orissa and Assam — Vilasarao Deshmukh, Rabri Devi, Naveen Patnaik and Tarun Gogoi — have offered full support to Ms. Jayalalithaa's initiatives for obtaining a special financial package from the Centre.
