Notice on delayed results for private candidates

CHENNAI April 29. The Madras High Court has ordered notices to the Government on a petition against delayed publication of results in the case of private candidates writing the SSLC and Plus Two examinations.

Admitting a public interest litigation petition filed by the Coimbatore Consumer Cause, the First Bench comprising the Chief Justice, B. Subhashan Reddy, and Justice Prabha Sridevan ordered notices to the Education Secretary, Director of Examinations and the Director of School Education.

The petitioner-organisation alleged that there was unnecessary and unwarranted delay and discrimination in the publication of results and issuance of mark sheets to private candidates.

In 2000-01, though about 8 lakh SSLC students sat for the examinations, the results of about 35,000 private students were not declared along with that of regular stream students.When the examination schedule, question paper and valuation of answer sheets were all conducted commonly for both the streams, there was no reason to delay the results of private candidates alone. The delay, ranging from a few days up to a month, cannot be compensated given the stiff competition for admission to higher education, it said.

This year, about 1.21 lakh private students had written SSLC examinations, while about 70,000 appeared for the Plus Two examinations.
