A flowery debate

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI April 29. For a refreshing change, it was a ``flowery'' debate in the Assembly today. Quite literally.

Flowers of different fragrance and hues — from jasmine to ``manoranjitham'' — are being cultivated on a vast stretch in Madurai and Dindigul districts. And, using the flowers, the Government should start a scent factory, several MLAs from the southern districts urged.

It was the Usilampatti MLA, L. Santhanam, who first asked for a scent factory in his constituency. Taking the cue, the Madurai Central MLA, M.A. Hakeem, too wanted a ``perfume '' plant set up. But not in his constituency, instead in the Speaker, K. Kalimuthu's Tirumangalam constituency swathed in exotic flora.

The Dindigul MLA, Balabarathi, too joined the chorus for a ``scent factory'', but for different reasons.

As Dindigul and Madurai witnessed a high incidence of female infanticide, a perfume factory would help to drive out poverty, main cause of foeticide and infanticide, she said.

Smelling the members' sentiments, the Rural Industries Minister, R. Vilwanathan, pleasantly agreed to consider their plea.
