Sir, I endorse Muzaffar Alam's observation on modernisation of madrasas in India (April 23). The basic madrasa the Maktab is a universal need of the community to teach the rudiments of Islam to its children. The Kerala model of Muslim children attending Maktabs (largely located in mohalla masjids) early in the morning and then going to school is a model worthy of emulation in all States. Thereafter some children can go back to madrasas for theological education.Instead of ``modernising the madrasas'', the Government should open schools in Muslim concentration areas. Most Muslim children would prefer school education. Syed Shahabuddin, New Delhi
