Exaggerated fears

Sir, — Nothing could be more exaggerated than the views expressed by Subramanian Swamy that the LTTE could, in collusion with the Tamil chauvinist forces in Tamil Nadu, attempt a balkanisation of the country. The LTTE's extremist activities in India in the past were to a major extent a result of the support given to it by the Dravidian parties.

After the assassination of the former Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi, and others, the sympathy in Tamil Nadu dropped considerably.

The mainstream Tamil political parties are no longer sympathetic to the LTTE. Also the Dravidian parties have long since given up the demand for a separate Tamil country.

In the circumstances, it is not clear how the fears of Dr. Swamy are justified. If there is a threat today of balkanisation of India, it is only from the Islamic jehadi forces.

V. Mohan,

Chennai
