Consultations before labour reforms promised

NEW DELHI APRIL 30. The Government today assured in the Rajya Sabha that all parties concerned, including trade unions, would be consulted before ushering in labour reforms.

"We will take into confidence all those concerned, including trade unions, before bringing in amendments in the Industrial Disputes Act and the Contract Labour Act to push forward labour reforms,'' the Union Labour Minister, Sharad Yadav, said replying to discussion on the working of his Ministry. He was non-committal when the Congress Member, Ramachandra Khuntia, and the CPI(M) Member, Jibon Roy, asked whether any decision had been taken on the assurance given by the Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee, that bonus act would be amended to raise the ceiling. He admitted that there was a need for a viable and effective social security particularly for unorganised labour.

Mr. Yadav said the Centre wanted ESI hospitals to function like the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). If State Governments were unable to run them efficiently, the Centre was willing to do
